General Metadata:

  • All SanGIS data is provided in zipped shape file format. This format is widely used and is native to ESRI software products. We use WinZip to compress these files.
  • SanGIS does not provide data in any other format. If another format is required, the user is responsible for conversion.
  • All SanGIS data is stored in the California State Plane Coordinate System (feet), Zone VI, North American Datum 83 (NAD 83).
  • The SanGIS basemap was acquired from SDG&E in 1990 after they digitized it for their internal use. The County, City and SanGIS have maintained the basemap since it was acquired from SDG&E and made many spatial improvements to it over the years.
  • Although new maps are entered using first order coordinate ties and coordinate geometry, the older areas of the basemap may be 10 to 100 feet off. Overall, the SanGIS basemap is considered +/- 10 feet spatial accuracy.
  • The SanGIS basemap should not be considered survey accurate and does not constitute a legal document. Please refer to official documents for decision-making.
  • Please read the SanGIS Data Agreement and Disclaimer before using SanGIS data.
System Requirements

  • You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) to read SanGIS Metadata. If you do not have Adobe Reader, visit www.adobe.com and click on “Get Adobe Reader”.
  • You will need some sort of GIS software to use these files. If you do not have GIS software, visit www.esri.com and download their free viewer called ArcExplorer.
Update Frequency

SanGIS files will typically be updated quarterly in January, April, July and October. However, many files only change annually or even less frequently.
